These custom paver designs bring pizzaz to patios, driveways and yards.
1. Game Time
Pavers can help create fun backyard game spaces. This Minneapolis backyard by Southview Design uses pavers and retaining wall block for a horseshoe pit. The homeowner competes in a horseshoe league and wanted to practice at home. The pavers in the spectator area are aligned in a fan pattern.
2. Quatrefoil Charm
Pavers in a quatrefoil design, repeated from this home’s Tudor-style architecture, are a focal point of this motor court. Reclaimed street pavers are used for the front drive, as well as the back patio of the home in Glencoe, Ill. The scale of the motor court was defined and softened with boxwood hedging and large lindens spaded in. The project, by Greenhaven Landscapes, was an Association of Professional Landscape Designers’ 2015 Landscape Design Award winner.
3. Paver Paradise
Paving blocks are set within crushed seashells just beyond the entry gates of a home in Coral Gables, Fla., providing a multitude of private outdoor rooms and rich textures. The award-winning design by ArquitectonicaGEO also incorporates native plants
4. French Inspiration
The inspiration for this Florida driveway’s paving pattern was taken from the classic shapes of the parterre gardens of Versailles. The formality has been deconstructed by ArquitectonicaGEO and reassembled into a careful arrangement of salt-treated, poured-in-place concrete pavers that appear to float in a pool of crushed seashells and native coral rock.
5. Shapely Status
Red-blend pavers play off the roof’s color in this Minnesota driveway by Southview Design. The pavers’ palette isn’t the only unique aspect in the design of the hill driveway. An inlay of pavers widens toward the bottom of the driveway.
6. Rebuilt Respite
After a fire burned the home to the ground, a Minnesota family rebuilt their home and worked with Southview Design to redo the landscaping. The new patio has Belgard Urbana pavers in various patterns, including an area cut out for plants. The natural stone boulders around the fire pit are made of Fond du Lac limestone.
7. Fancy Fountain
For this substantial water fountain and pond, Backyard Getaway in Myakka City, Fla., used retaining wall stacked pavers on a paver patio
8. Eco-Friendly Elements
The paving paths are spaced with planted joints, increasing the permeability whenever possible. The coral paving is locally sourced by Nievera Williams Design for this award-winning Florida home.
9. Circular Curb Appeal
Inlays, with shapes such as circles and arched designs, can liven up paver driveways and give them a custom look. Southview Design, which created this driveway in North Oaks, Minn., describes it like this: “Pavers are the pinnacle of driveway design.”
10. Sweet Spot
Southview Design used an inlay of circular pavers in this shady area surrounded by boulders for a client in Minnesota.
11. Wonderful Walkway
The paver walkway narrows and widens, adding interest to the renovated landscape and exterior of a Minnesota home. Southview Design laid out the red brick pavers in a soldier course pattern and selected a lighter tone for the walkway’s border. Modular retaining walls with wide steps and landings extend the home’s architecture to the street.
12. Cozy Courtyard
Coral paving winds around to a privacy courtyard planted with soft tipped aloe and ‘Fireball’ bromeliads, creating a tropical, yet drought-tolerant secret garden. The low-maintenance design is by Nievera Williams Design of Palm Beach, Fla.
13. Cool on the Coast
Pavers fit into a Southern California home’s odd-shaped outdoor area, which also needed privacy from nearby restaurants. This coastal home had an available landscape area of about 1,100 square feet. The award-winning design by Grounded Modern Landscape Architecture captured as much useable outdoor living space as possible.
A contemporary luxury home near the Las Vegas strip has native desert plants and an exterior wall draped in steel mesh as striking features, along with brick and concrete pavers for the driveway and walkway.
