Every year you add just a little bit to your landscaping and this is the year you decide to create the perfect path through your garden landscaping. While it may seem like a very involved project, following the right steps can make designing, executing and enjoying your path so much easier. Also, doing it right the first time will save you lots of headaches in the future trying to correct mistakes. Here are the main steps to help you along your way to creating your path.
Materials– first find the brick pavers that you want to use. You’ll want to make sure you buy edging, weed guard and a rubber mallet. If you plan to make your design very intricate, you may want to invest in a mason’s chisel for splitting the pavers. Sand should be used to create a flat base to begin laying the bricks.
Path– you should use some marking paint to put dots where you want your path to begin, end and travel through. Then all you have to do is connect the dots with smooth lines creating the pathway that you want. Be cautious of your turns, if they are too sharp, you will create gaps between the pavers.
Dig– begin digging out the path only after you have made sure that your path is free of any utility or sprinkler lines. You’ll want to dig down far enough to put a decent layer of sand and then the brick pavers (6-7” deep should be plenty).
Edge and Line– next you will want to edge the path to keep everything out and the bricks in place. The top of the edging should be slightly higher than the rest of your yard but flush with any driveways or patios. Before you add the sand, line the bottom with weed guard.
Set the Pavers– now comes the fun part of designing your path. A few tips to keep in mind as you begin laying the bricks are:
- Stagger by half a brick
- Only split in half, nothing smaller
- Fill the joints with sand
- Keep the tops flush with each other
- You can edge your path with a row of cobbles to add to the design
